Troubleshooting Phone Connection Issues
Please Follow The Steps Below
By completing these checks, you can often resolve the issue without needing a visit. Remember, if an engineer finds a fault within your premises, a charge will be applied to your bill for the visit.
Ensure your internet connection is stable and has sufficient bandwidth to support VoIP services. Run a speed test to verify your internet speeds and check for any packet loss.
Thoroughly inspect all Ethernet and power cables involved in your VoIP setup. Ensure all connections are secure and cables are not damaged or worn out. Avoid using splitters and consider using high-quality CAT5e or CAT6 cables.
Ensure your router supports and is configured for Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize VoIP traffic. Disable SIP ALG and forward necessary ports. Check for and install any firmware updates available for your router.
If reconfiguring your router does not resolve the issues, consider upgrading to a dual-band router that can handle VoIP traffic more efficiently. Look into routers with dedicated channels for VoIP communications.
Position your router in a central, elevated location to minimize obstacles that can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. Avoid placing the router near other electronic devices that could cause electromagnetic interference.
To further diagnose VoIP issues, test the connection using a softphone app on your mobile device over a mobile network. Follow these steps:
- Download a Softphone App: Install our softphone app on your mobile device.
- Configure the Softphone App: Set up the app with your Softphone QR Code. Contact us if you need the QR Code.
- Connect to Mobile Network: Turn off Wi-Fi on your mobile device to ensure the call uses the mobile network.
- Dial a Test Number: Use the softphone app to dial a known working number, such as a customer service hotline or another phone number you control.
- Observe and Note: Pay close attention to the call attempt and note the following:
- Whether the call connects successfully.
- The call quality, including any issues like choppy audio, one-way audio, or delays.
- Any error messages displayed by the app if the call fails.
- Specific details such as “Call Failed” message, “SIP Error 408 – Request Timeout,” or any other SIP error codes.
If the call fails, document what happened and the exact error message displayed. This information will be critical for further troubleshooting and resolving the VoIP issues.
